Mecklenburg library system given Five-Star rating

February 23, 2009

At a time when PLCMC is seeing record, double-digit percent increases in usage, while at the same time facing potential budget cuts, a national index of public library service from Library Journal (LJ) has recognized PLCMC among the top libraries in the country. LJ, the library field’s leading professional publication, has created the LJ Index of Public Library Service, a “star” rating system similar to the Michelin and Mobile guides used for restaurants and hotels. They have given PLCMC a “Five-Star” rating, the highest possible. You can read more about the rating in a recent library news release.

The inclusion of the Library in this select grouping is a credit not only to the organization and its employees, but also to the community that it serves. Thank you for your continued support.

How the library is planning for its long-term future

February 20, 2009

Darrel Williams, chair of the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County Board of Trustees, talks with the Charlotte Observer about how the current economic crisis is affecting library planning.

“During this challenging time the library must plan for how to best provide for the needs of a rapidly growing community five, 10 and 25 years into the future, while also being conscious of our current recession. The due diligence we are putting into our Facilities Master Plan now will allow us to move forward with the confidence that the decisions we make will best serve our community today and well into the future.” ~ Darrel Williams (excerpt from article)
